About the Ghanaian Association of Ottawa (GAO)
The Ghanaian Association of Ottawa (GAO) traces its roots back to the 1970s, when a group of Ghanaian students and young professionals residing in the National Capital Region (NCR) came together. Their goal was to form an organization that would cater to their needs and interests. Over the decades, the association has experienced both great and turbulent times. Today, GAO stands as a robust non-profit community organization representing Ghanaians residing in the NCR, which encompasses Ottawa and Gatineau.
Mission and Commitment: GAO is dedicated to organizing Ghanaians socially, culturally, and democratically to promote the collective needs of the Ghanaian community in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Through various events and initiatives, GAO aims to foster a strong sense of community and support among its members.
The Ghanaian Community in NCR: The National Capital Region is currently home to over 1,000 Ghanaians and Ghanaian-Canadians. Many members of this vibrant community are employed in the public sector, high-tech industries, and healthcare. Additionally, there is a significant student population that transitions yearly into various professions across Canada, contributing to the diverse and dynamic fabric of the region.
Connection to Ghana: Ottawa is not just a hub for Ghanaian-Canadians; it also hosts the Ghanaian High Commission, further strengthening the ties between Ghana and Canada. The presence of the High Commission facilitates cultural exchange, diplomatic relations, and provides support to Ghanaians living in the NCR.
Join Us: The Ghanaian Association of Ottawa welcomes all Ghanaians and friends of Ghana in the NCR to join our community. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or someone interested in Ghanaian culture, GAO offers a platform to connect, share, and grow together.
Save the Date and Join the Celebration!
Donβt miss out on the fun! We look forward to seeing you there!
